A chilly breeze on your neck sends shivers down your arms and the sun’s heat disappears the second the wind hits your skin. This is windchill. Windchill is the temperature a person feels because of the wind, and it lowers your body temperature when the flow of lower-temperature air hits your skin. So it makes a big difference, especially in colder climates, whether or not your gear is windproof.

To get technical, the windchill factor measures the rate of heat loss from the skin exposed to air. As the windspeed increases, the heat lost from the skin also increases, making the air feel colder even though the air itself has the same temperature. Under calm conditions and a temperature of -25 degrees Celsius, exposed skin would freeze in 30 minutes. When you add a wind speed of 40 km per hour (25 mph, 11 m/s), exposed skin will freeze in less than 10 minutes.

How GORE-TEX INFINIUM™ works:

The INFINIUM™ membrane is created using an ultra-thin protective layer laminated to a lightweight textile, making our products totally windproof. Although textiles such as microfibers, closely woven fabrics, and many fleece materials are often labeled as windproof, even light winds can penetrate most of these fabrics, making you feel chilled and uncomfortable. The standards set up by GORE-TEX mean a fabric can only be considered truly windproof if its air permeability is 1.0 cfm (< 5 l/m2/s) or less. It’s a standard that our products easily meet.

The membrane technology in GORE-TEX INFINIUM™ WINDSTOPPER® products has billions of pores that are 900 times larger than water vapor molecules, so even though wind can’t get in, moisture from sweat vapor can easily get out.

In addition to the GORE® membrane technology, a durable water-repellent (DWR) treatment is applied to most of these products. This penetrates a jacket’s outer fibers, lowering the surface tension so that water beads up and rolls off. That means less water accumulation, resulting in less wind chill and less extra weight, making the products water-repellent.
