Blaze is

the new green

JULY 2020

We have met some of the suppliers of orange-colored products to talk about needs, benefits and solutions regarding items with high visibility.

Seeing red, meaning the reaction when you get angry. The expression may come from the fact that a bull gets angry at a red cloth being waved, or perhaps from the blood flowing to cheeks and face when we get furious. But if we look at hunting, red as a color has become increasingly important. In the 70s/80s, hunting clothes were often just basic practical work attire.

Sometimes it was work clothes from the farm, maybe used with a green or brown jacket as well. The end result was no matter what usually just green or brown outfits. Further into the 90/00's, camouflage was mixed into the green and in recent years, during the 00/10's, the red color has made a strong increase. This applies not only to garments and outfits, but also to equipment, but let's start with the former.

Marcus Bjärneroth, Director of Public/Media Relations at Garmin Nordic

Handheld that is visible

If we look at hand-held units, the trend is also confirmed in this area. Here we have Swarowski EL O-Range, Zodiac Neo, Garmin Alpha 50 and Garmin inReach. When it comes to watches we have the Garmin Instinct as an example, but also changeable wristband that makes a black watch more red or orange.

Visible watch

Garmin has produced smart watches for the outdoor customer for over 15 years, but one of the most recent products that stand out visually is Garmin Instinct, a durable outdoor watch with hunting features. For example, the user can see the location of his hunting dog if it is connected to Garmin Alpha. The watch is significantly red and Marcus Bjärneroth, Director of Public/Media Relations at Garmin Nordic, has seen a great deal of interest from the hunting squad regarding the watches.

– I am thinking mainly of Fenix, Tacticx and Foretrex, but to fit with other products with high visibility in their design we developed Instinct, Marcus say.

– It has been received very well and we see that many hunters want to combine a smart hunting watch with being visible in the forest, he continues.

Marcus explains further that the interest in being visible and being transparent is increasing.

– We see that many hunters share their position and share location information digitally for increased security, for example with the Alpha series or with InReach.

The hunters want color

In the past decade, there has been a clear tendency to want to incorporate more blaze, in the hunting attire but also in many other items in the hunting industry. This is, of course, to some extent driven by legislation as many countries requires hunters to have blaze or high-visibility colors when hunt. But there is also a strong interest from the hunters themselves, according to Adina Kufeld, Design Manager at Härkila:

– Our experience is that the main reason for this is actually the hunters themselves who focus on the safety aspect, and that the hunting industry now designs and produces products with good visibility and with a focus on safety.

Although much in the clothing industry is about fashion and trends, one of the basic features of modern hunting clothes is safety.

– As hunters, we have a responsibility to exercise our lifestyle with the utmost care, and safety is always the first priority for hunters. We all want to ensure that everyone returns home safely, Hi-vis clothing is just a small part of the safety aspect in hunting, but if we at Härkila can help in getting a little more safety into the lifestyle that we love and care for, we obviously will do that, ”says Adina Kufeld.

"Saw the need for orange/red shells for the sake of safety"

Fredrik Johansson

First out on the hunting side

– I actually think our hearing protectors were the first released in orange on the hunting side when it comes to hard products, explains Fredrik Johansson, Global Product Marketing Manager in Hunting and Shooting at 3M Personal Safety Division.

As people began to use hearing protection when hunting and not just on the shooting range, 3M PELTOR saw the need for orange/red shells for the sake of safety.

Fredrik says that they work daily to protect people and peoples hearing.

– Therefore, it was a matter of importance when we got the opportunity to make this possible. It was a success when it came out and now it is a requirement from many hunters, ”says Fredrik Johansson.

Red eye sights

”The amount of inquiries on models in the orange color has clearly increased"

Alexander Nordin

Red sight both inside and outside

The view of rifles has often been very traditional and conservative in terms of color. There have been occasional lumber in gray, stainless, sand and sometimes camouflage etcetera, but few who really stuck out – until Aimpoint showed the way, so to say. Aimpoint has built the red-point view since 1975 and during the IWA fair in 2018, they launched their first vision in orange ever, an H-2 Weaver that would be released in 1,000 numbered copies.

– The interest in the product turned out to be above all expectations, so we decided to double the production and release 2,000 H-2 Weaver Orange, says Alexander Nordin, Regional Sales Director Sweden. And continue:

– We then sold the numbered copies of Micro H-2 to our distributors. They quickly sold out in each country and the amount of inquiries on other models in the orange color has clearly increased.

To see and be seen

With the right distance the shooter increases the aim and therefor control of distance is of the key component for a hunter. Especially on new territory and unfamiliar settings, it is at the outmost importance to locate the limit in distance for a safe shot.

Here the binocular EL-range with distance assessment a valuable tool and has gained great acknowledgment and engagement. Fredrik Jonsson at Swarovski Optik says:

– Being seen properly for other hunters but at the same time being camouflaged can be a challenge, but with smart products the hunter not only uses for hunting and distance assessment, but also being seen properly. We have seen and increased demand from the market for these types of colored products and, presumably, the trend will continue to increase.

KNIFE

"The function is primary and that visually seeing their knife is practically important"

Johan Skullman

Tricky to find the knife

How many people have put the knife down for a second to grab something else and then have problems finding it when you turn around again? Or lost it from the knife suffer and realized that it cannot be found even though one has backtracked in the same footsteps? This has Morakniv taken hold of and can present several knives in clear, orange color.

– Times change and thus the view of how one as a hunter profiles. We still believe that the function is primary and that visually seeing their knife is practically important, but also a way of identifying oneself in suitable products for hunting, says Johan Skullman, global ambassador at Morakniv.

Kyrre Jonassen, Sales Manager at DryTech

You eat with your eyes

If we look at the red-orange color, it can also be found in food packaging such as DryTech's Real Turmat as an example.

Kyrre Jonassen, Sales Manager at DryTech, tells:

– The choice of orange color was carefully thought out from the beginning. From the consumer, we have clear feedback that the packaging is visible in the field. This means that the packaging can easily be identified and taken back from the forest to be handled as the right type of waste. The packaging can also have a safety aspect in different types of activities.

The future looks red

Alexander says that, like other manufacturers in the industry, they have seen an increase in interest in orange-colored products aimed at hunting.

– Personally, I think it is a mixture of that it is neat, and that it is also practical to have some of your equipment in orange, he says. Fredrik Johansson completes:

– I think the color has come to stay as more people hunt with bullet weapons, and that you are hunting more in groups.

Marcus Bjärneroth agrees:

– To be seen will be at least as important, if not more important, in the future. Colored products for physical visibility together with technical equipment for digital visibility and connection, I believe will continue to be large and developed in several areas, he concludes.
